RELIEF PAPER SCULPTURES PART Ii
5/11/17
Students have been working diligently folding and arranging their paper sculptures symmetrically. They are developing slowly but surely. My only regret in doing this project is not doing it sooner in the year so they could be put on display!

In collaboration with the the 4th grade teachers students are learning about symmetry in art. We discussed linear symmetry (1 line of symmetry) and radial symmetry (more than 1 line of symmetry) and how symmetry can be found in both nature and human made objects. The project consists of dividing a background black piece of paper into sections by a vertical, horizontal, and diagonal folds. The students will learn a series of 4 origami folds in which they will compile a collection of these basic folds and arrange them on the black paper using the principles of symmetry.

Students looked at many examples of vases from the Chinese Ming Dynasty era. They worked hard to create a symmetrical drawing of vase which they then colored in with blue oil pastel. Students painted over the vase with white paint, and then sketched out a design, drawing inspiration from nature and/or their personal interests. The last phase of the project involves scratching away the surface of the vase drawing with a wooden skewer to reveal the vivid blue underneath.
