The final cultural art project students created was inspired by Adinkra symbols created by the people of Ghana and Cote d"Ivoire. The students sifted through dozens of Adinkra symbols and chose 1 or 2 symbols whose meaning resonated with them. They drew the symbol on paper, cut out the paper, and traced their design onto styrofoam. Then students cut out their design from the styrofoam and glued it to the cardboard to create a stamp. The final phase of the project consisted of students rolling a brayer on a black inked plate and applying the ink to their stamp. Students firmly pressed their stamp onto the paper to create a print.
Students are learning all about the ocean and sea life in their classroom. In art, we looked at many examples of fish that have bioluminescence. They created scratch art boards by first coloring in paper completely with oil pastels and then painting over with black acrylic paint. They created a sketch by drawing a bioluminescent fish from observing images of them. They have begun to scratch their image into the board which will be cut out and put onto their classrooms ocean life bulletin board.
Students have also learned a watercolor technique which involves painting an area with a wash of color and then sprinkling a little salt while the paint is still wet to create an interesting effect. The paintings will serve as a back drop to their bulletin board in their classroom

Students prepared their art experiments from a few weeks prior, which will be compiled and put into an accordion book. Pics to come soon!
They have also been working on creating scratch art boards of sea life with bioluminescence. See pics and description above.

Students completed their Sumi bamboo painting and the results are amazing! They are currently on display in the gallery at Cove.
Continuing their cultural art unit students learned about Ukrainian Psyanky eggs. They first painted their eggs a solid color of their choice and created a sketch drawing inspiration from the traditional designs of Psanky eggs. The last step consisted of them drawing their design onto their egg using sharpies and paint markers.

Students have been working on a variety of art experiments related to their push pull unit they're studying in their classroom. They experimented with wind by blowing into a straw to move primary colors around on paper. They experimented with rolling and movement by rolling marbles in primary paint colors and lastly students experimented with gravity, ramp, and movement by putting cars on top of a ramp and letting go of the cars to see what kinds of marks (and colors) they would make on the paper.

Students viewed a series of artwork called "Little People" created by the artist Rob Dunleavy. We discussed the characteristics of the art work and students worked to create their own little people by first drawing on paper using shape templates, coloring in with marker, and lastly cutting and gluing onto black paper.
